Electing Autocrats

I was talking with a long-time Revered Community Leader (RCL) last night about the college and about Warrenton's official push to get the college to re-consider putting the college on the Nygaard property there. The RCL said, referring to the college board, "Why do we elect people and then try to tell them what to do?"

Because we don't give up our rights to speak out and to shape our government and our communities when we vote.

What is the point of electing an autocrat?

What Was it Larry "The Funster" Pfund or was it Dan Hess, both of the Astoria Port Commission and after being criticized early-on after the announcement that our Port Commission on the advice of Executive Port Director Peter Gearin, committed our community to possible life with Calpine LNG on the Skipanon by signing an absurdly one-sided lease agreement, that said, in an exaggerated voice noticeably on the verge of tears; "Well that's what they elect us for!!!"

These, as I call them, "County Brahmans" are so jaded and accustomed to this sense of entitlement and lack of challenge just assume this is the way things are and just don't know any different.

Now this weekend, every one of these "Nabob's historical, unquestioning Nabob counterparts will be called to make sure they've done what they are expected to do to save the herd and their "Grazing Ground" from those dastardly "Outlanders".

I challenge anyone to ask for enrollment figures and for data showing how classrooms at the current campus are filled to capacity.

We DO NOT need a new college campus. Classrooms are left empty during the afternoons and evenings. With creative planning a new building could be built on the current site.

Ask Greg Hamann what NEW courses or degrees will draw new students to CCC…It is common knowledge that local high school enrollment is declining. Where are they new students for CCC going to come from? What new college programs will draw students from out of the area?

These are questions that need to be addressed.

By the way, how does one become a "Revered Community Leader" around these parts?

Now, About the College.

All these politicians right now are talking "Economic Development" and as usual and without significant change, that's all it will be this time around but, if by some miracle we do find opportunities to attract Good, clean, cohesive and compatible industry to this community, First rate educational and training opportunities will be one key link in that chain of appeals to the right kind of industry.

Distance learning and satellite facilities will be more critical too than a huge campus designed for high student population.

I envision a day when a person can actually earn a full four year degree and never attend an onsite class except maybe for labs and absolutely necessary site training( Auto mechanics, welding, maritime programs, etc.)

We don't need a new campus?

I think we do but not a $42Million Dollar main campus unless we are going to go for in-County four year degree programs and that, in my view should go in a planned development say on Skipanon Peninsula as one option.
